Brainwave Jr. Recap

This episode was a VERY big one! We've been waiting to discuss this for a couple of weeks and now the time has finally come! Some of Henry King Jr.'s actions can never be forgiven but the way he showed up in this episode was quite different than the bully we've seen all season! This episode really marked the turning point in the season. We are now quickly headed toward a huge finale that will pit the ISA vs the JSA! Here's what stood out to us:

  1. Two Years Ago: We open on how Pat and Barbara met in Blue Valley. As wholesome as it was, they end up sharing a banana split. We jump to where we left off last episode, Barbara is learning everything from Pat and Courtney. It doesn't go well and Barbara asks Pat to leave. At Blue Valley hospital, we learn that Brainwave has lost ten years of memories. He is a lot less supervillain and is just learning that his wife is dead. For the first time in a long time, Henry hugs his son.
  2. Who Killed Mary: In a dream, Henry Jr. hears his dad thinking about his wife and Jordan's name comes up. Did Jordan murder Brainwave's wife? Jordan arrives at the hospital to see his old friend. Henry Jr. learns that the ISA is responsible for Mary's death. We find out that Mary was the sister of Starman which is what brought the JSA on to the ISA's radar. Henry Jr. now believes that Jordan killed his mom.
  3. The Staff Remembers: Now that most of the ISA is being discovered, the Staff goes to ask Courtney to go out. Courtney says no but the Staff is implusive. He realizes who Jordan is and goes to get revenge for Starman. Brainwave is able to stop the staff and Icicle freezes it and takes control! The next morning, Courtney goes to find the staff is gone. Barbara is committed on taking Courtney out of Blue Valley. Courtney goes to see Pat at the garage and they learn the staff is gone. Pat goes to the America Dream headquarters to check up on Barbara.
  4. Henry Finds Courtney: Henry Jr. now believing that Jordan killed his mom and finds Courtney. He touches Courtney and gives her all his memories on what just happened. Courtney thinks that Henry is her cousin, they share a hug. Henry Jr. wants to save his dad, they don't want him to return to his evil self. Courtney goes to get the JSA so they can save Brainwave and get Courtney's staff back. At the American Dream, Barbara is investigating, she isn't fully convinced Pat is lying.
  5. In the Tunnels: The JSA with Henry Jr. head into the tunnels of the ISA. The JSA split up to do recon and agree to meet up again in 15 minutes. Jordan and his family speak Norwegian in front of Pat and Barbara, but Barbara has the forethought to record them. She can translate it later with Pat. In the tunnels Dragon King is working on Brainwave to give him his memories back. Shiv, still in her cage, sees Stargirl and alerts her dad. Dragon King then commands his minions to attack. Brainwave Jr., Wildcat and Stargirl all start to engage. Hourman and Dr. Midnite find Solomon Grundy and Hourman is set on killing him. Wildcat is able to get the staff back to Courtney in time and she blasts Dragon King. Henry Jr. learns that Dragon King was able to get Henry Sr.'s memories back. Unable to free Solomon, The JSA and Henry Jr. rush to escape.
  6. Brainwave Jr.: Barbara learns the truth and Pat and her kind of team up again in the diner. Brainwave finds the JSA in the tunnels. They are able to bend the bars blocking their way to get to safety but Brainwave isn't stopping. Brainwave Jr. and Brainwave stand on opposite sides of each other. Henry Jr. wants to be good and wants his dad to be good. We learn that Brainwave was the one who killed his wife. The divide between father and son is complete. Brainwave Jr. is strong but not strong enough. He is crushed saving the JSA.

Another solid episode with great background music for the opening scene. Good stuff and hope it continues right up to the finale. I dare say that this is the best show on the CW.
I dare say I agree with you! :-)

Indeed. One of the things that makes this show great is that they manage to keep the tension and danger level high so you actually worry about the characters.

The background music/sound effects are also used well to heighten the sense of danger and unease. For example, a couple episodes back when Courtney descended into the tunnels for the first time there was this really eerie 'music' in the background which made the scene a lot creepier. Kudos to the composer!

I hope they are able to keep momentum with the move away from DCU.

Brainwave is quite the cold-hearted killer. Villains have been hit or miss with Arrowverse shows. Stargirl has an abundance of riches in that department. It's almost unfair!

Hmmm... left with lots of questions.

First, I am glad we got to see Pat and Barbara's first meeting. I really don't think we have had any opportunities before this to buy into their apparent whirlwind romance and marriage. So this gave us something.

If Starman was Courtney's dad, you'd think Barbara would recognize him as he didn't have a mask in the picture. But who did Barbara email if Starman is dead... the first one maybe??? Ih, the questions.

Henry has got to be alive under all that rumble, right?

It was very heroic of Henry Jr to sacrifice himself for the others. Even Yolanda was emotionally moved and had to be consoled.
I laughed when Courtney declared that it was her birthright to be Stargirl and Barbara yelled at her to go to her room. Poor Mike is still in the dark of the going on's.
On the romantic side I feel that Rick and Yolanda are going to hook up.

How can you go wrong with Marvin Gaye and Tammie Terrell...and including removing their vocals as Pat and Barbara met...and then The Monotones The Book of Love as they had the banana split...and then...BACK TO REALITY! Geoff Johns your taste in music is awesome.

As for Courtney playing little miss blabbermouth...some things are better left unsaid

As for Brainwave

Another Greek tragedy with a slight hint of reform...emphasis on slight. Quote:
Henry Jr. learns that Dragon King was able to get Henry Sr.'s memories back.
Cosmic Staff is very impulsive...and foolish.

Quote:
Courtney thinks that Henry is her cousin, they share a hug
. That's the CW for you, I guess.

Barbara is a torn soul in more ways than one, yet quite resourceful

Fight scene was awesome and great to see the staff back in Stargirl's hands.

I wanted Henry junior to join the JSA...so much for that...RIP Brainwave, Jr. CURSE YOU ISA!!!!!!
