Episode 2 "STRIPE" Recap

Last week the entire world was shown Stargirl and the results have been astounding! Rotten Tomatoes gave it a certified "Fresh" rating and bloggers as well as big media sites are applauding how Geoff Johns was able to bring Golden Age superheroes into 2020. Last week we were left with Courtney barely escaping Brainwave's wrath only to be confronted by Pat Dugan in his mighty STRIPE robot. This week, will Courtney go another round with Brainwave? Does she finally make the iconic Stargirl costume? What will Pat have to say after catching her using the staff again? All those answers and more in our recap of "STRIPE". Here's what stood out to us:

  1. STRIPE: We pick up right where we left off. After getting Courtney to trust him, Pat in the STRIPE robot takes off and takes Courtney to his garage. Courtney is clearly upset after her fight. Pat tries to console her but she demands answers, "What is Brainwave doing in Blue Valley". We cut to William aka the Wizard's home where Brainwave is waiting for him in his home. He alerts William that a girl has Starman's staff. We learn that the ISA is working to make a grand plan titled "Project New America" in Blue Valley as a test for all of America. It's clear that the Wizard and Brainwave have a bit of a power struggle.
  2. The Whole Truth: The original Hourman survived the attack ten years ago. He tracked the ISA to Blue Valley but he and his wife died in an accident shortly after. Rex gave his research to Pat who felt that the ISA must have passed through Blue Valley but instead stayed there. Courtney's only take away from Pat telling her that he is doing this alone was to make a costume to keep her identity safe and the family secure. We follow up with a hilarious montage of STRIPE testing and Pat being consoled by his dog.
  3. Brainwaves: Brainwave talks to his son, the bully from school. He learns it was a girl who destroyed his car. They have an almost scary conversation. It does end with Bainwave testing his son to see if his powers are developing. So far, that doesn't seem to be the case. Courtney sneaks into a sewing class and repurposes Starman's costume into a costume for herself. Interestingly enough, Brec Bassinger asked to be put into a sewing class so that she could make things feel realistic for this scene. Brainwave begins his research to find Courtney. An open house for parents and students is being held at Blue Valley High. Both Brainwave and Courtney are in attendance.
  4. The High School Mixer: Brainwave begins walking through the parents night to find Courtney. Courtney is looking for Brainwave and any other ISA member. She approaches Pat to see if he's seen anyone. Courtney finds Brainwave first but she shouts his name in her mind and he hears it. She is now being hunted by Brainwave through the crowd. Trying to make her escape, she gets cornered by Brainwave at the high school. He starts to read her mind and learn everything about her. He tells her that she needs to bring the Cosmic Staff to him at the school at midnight tonight or he'll kill Barbara making it look like a stroke. Courtney finds Pat and they head home.
  5. The Danger of the Situation: Pat and Courtney share the reality of the situation. Pat tries to tell Courtney how dangerous this situation is. Pat won't let Courtney go to the meeting with Brainwave. He asks that Courtney stay to protect her mom and Mike. If he isn't back in the morning, Courtney needs to get the family out of Blue Valley. Pat goes to confront Brainwave. He starts throwing cars at him. He can't get them to him fast enough though as Brainwave catches everything with his mind and throws it back at him. Courtney won't let Pat do it alone though and putting on the suit for the first time, Courtney arrives to save Pat and fight Brainwave with STRIPE. The staff is clearly too powerful for Brainwave but he gets it away from her to nearly crush her with a car bumper. STRIPE distracts Brainwave long enough for Courtney to get the staff. The staff uses all its energy on Brainwave putting him into a coma!

In the final wrap up moments. We discover that Stargirl and STRIPE have dumped Brainwave off at the hospital in regular clothes. Courtney and Pat share a moment together. They made a good team and took Brainwave down together. Pat is scared that he can't do this but Courtney pulls a Supergirl hope speech and chooses Pat to be her sidekick. She names him STRIPE and Courtney asks, which bad guy is next? We cut to Icicle arriving back in Blue Valley, the leader of the ISA! He walks us through a secret underground lair where the ISA is set up. The America Dream company is actually the ISA's company!

Already Liking the show despite having to find other means to watch it where I am since no network I can get carries it.

Nice fresh story that’s so far all about fantasy and taking you away from the world around us. Nice mix of action and plot building.

After watching a YouTube on the creation of Stargirl and who she was based off and how the show runner is her creator I’m even more encouraged for its future. What an awesome tribute to his late little sister.

There is nothing against comics and comic based TV broaching politics. But it's nice to have a show that's a little bit more about escapism.

This is what real superhero shows/comics etc are supposed to be like. Take us away from the real world issues and barriers or belief. So far job well done. A refreshing change from the Supergirl and Batgirl mess

Between the DC Universe stream and CW broadcast, and I think I am leaping way ahead, but if and when this comes out on DVD (put me down for an advanced order by the way!!!!! ), what version will it be? DCU or CW? If I had to make a guess, I would say DCU.

I would hope so!

And I'm pretty sure I'll order it as well.

When she got pounded on by the latest villain she ended up bruised and bleeding. There is a bit of a change here from Supergirl.

Yeah, Stargirl is at risk of being seriously injured but she is fearless none the less which makes her courage equal to Supergirl. The only thing she's got going for her is the cosmic staff which is becoming part of her. She's probably going to get bruised and bloodied next episode when she faces Icicle.

The show is going over well, too!
From the Hollywood Reporter:
: "Stargirl retained nearly all of the audience from its premiere last week (1.18 million vs. 1.22 million) and was steady in adults 18-49 at 0.3. Legends of Tomorrow (770,000 viewers, 0.2 in 18-49) was steady as well. "

Readers should note that the DC internet version of the show is 10 minutes longer than the CW version, to judge from Episode 1, so if you watch this on TV tomorrow you will probably miss some interesting scenes.

I think they said the first 2 was about 8 minutes longer on DCU but the rest are almost identical.

There was a pretty jarring cut to commercial on CW.

Great stuff--again. :-) I liked showing the learning curve for Courtney and Pat, both in action and in covering for their injuries!

Nice followup to the pilot. I especially enjoyed the action at the end with Stargirl and Stripe shorting out Brainwave and landing him in the hospital. I also like Courtney's spunk and courage. Good episode and looking forward to next Tuesday night.

I was kinda wondering how long Courtney was going to be the disrespectful teen towards unwanted stepdad Pat... it looks like maybe they reached their place of mutual respect and understanding by the end of episode 2.

The first two episodes were fun. I really like the robot S.T.R I.P.E. suit.

With the fall season questionable due to Covid-19, its best to enjoy the summer bounty while we can.
