Hourman and Dr. Mid-Nite Recap

The new Justice Society of America is about to double in size this episode as we look to the origins of the new Hourman and Dr. Mid-Nite. Today's all new episode of Stargirl featured some interesting looks into the past of the previous JSA as well as the new members, Rick and Beth! One of the new JSA members needs to be really convinced to join while the other takes their position almost by force! In case you've missed it, we have a very cool behind the scenes gallery of this episode that you can see here. Look at how the crew transformed Dallas Georgia into Halloween time Blue Valley Nebraska! Now on to the episode! Here's what stood out to us:

  1. Nine Years Ago: Rex Tyler didn't die! The original Hourman didn't die in the attack on the JSA headquarters. Rex and Wendy flee to try and get ahead of the ISA. They leave their son in the care of Wendy's brother. They change his name to Rick Harris. Matt, Wendy's brother is thrust into taking care of Rick but it's clear he doesn't want to be a caretaker. Just as Rex and Wendy make their escape, Solomon Grundy appears and kills them both in what looks like a car accident.
  2. Present Day: Rick has the 1966 Mustang like his father used to have. He's working on putting in a new carburetor but his uncle has sold it. It's clear Rick and his uncle aren't getting along. Courtney thinks that keeping the JSA stuff in the house is no longer a good idea, she is going to take it to school. Courtney and Pat debrief on their new ISA finds. Pat has found out who the Wizard was and Courtney has identified the new Fiddler. Now that Courtney and Yolanda are looking for new members, Beth follows them to hear what they are planning.
  3. Car Trouble: Pat's classic Chevrolet breaks down. Courtney and Pat start to fix it when Rick comes by. He can hear the issue with the Chevrolet. With Rick being near, the Hourglass begins to glow. Courtney thinks she might have a new recruit. Neither Pat nor Courtney know Rick is actually the son of Rex Tyler. Courtney goes to follow Rick. When Rick confronts Courtney, the hourglass is no longer glowing, has it been longer than an hour?
  4. Beth Chapel: Beth has tracked down Courtney and visits her house. She claims she's a friend of Courtney and Barbara lets her in. She sees that the dog is chewing on something he shouldn't and it turns out to be Dr. Mid-Nite's goggles. Beth then sneaks into Courtney's room where she puts the goggles on. It turns out that the goggles are an AI, not unlike Ironman's operating system. Charles McNider has programmed his voice into the JSA system. Courtney confronts Beth and she knows that Courtney is Stargirl. During Courtney's talk to Beth, the two discover who Rick really is via the goggles. In the meantime, Pat shows up to Rick's place to drop off a carburetor to Rick. Pat quickly discovers that Rick's "dad" isn't a very good one. Rick wasn't home because he was stealing a keg for a Halloween party.
  5. Halloween Party: Cindy is having a Halloween party and Beth and Courtney go in to find Rick. Wandering the party, we see Henry's brainwave powers are starting to kick in. He can't control them and he leaves the party because it's too "loud". Courtney finds Rick and they gather the JSA to talk with Rick. Rick puts on the hourglass and turns it over. He instantly gets the super strength. He is able to crush a keg like a coke can. Rick takes the hourglass to "do his own thing" but Courtney and Yolanda think they can get through to Rick if they get in their suits and stand toe-to-toe with him. Rick, seeing his uncle being a drunk slob, goes and punches his truck in half!
  6. The New Hourman: Stargirl and Wildcat arrive to talk with Rick. Rick is really hurting. He believes that his parents were killed by hitting a tree. His anger is poisoning him. He isn't ready to join the team and Courtney decides that he is going to be too dangerous with the hourglass if he doesn't get in line. The two pair off about to fight each other when Beth arrives. She tells Rick it wasn't an accident and shows him what really happened. Seeing what happened gets Rick on the team but he's still a bit shaky. He wants revenge.

In the final wrap up moments, the ISA block an important shipment. The Fiddler comes out and puts the driver under her spell. Pat thinks he knows who Rick really is. His uncle's truck arrives at Pat's shop. The man who gave the Gambler the info on the shipment is dead from a poisoned chocolate coin. Pat goes to confront Courtney about Rick who he thinks has the hourglass. Instead Pat finds that Courtney has been giving out all the JSA stuff and recruiting behind Pat's back!

Heh. For me, the best part was how Beth just kind of bulldozed Courtney the way Courtney does to Pat! :D

This series is great fun. Looking forward to next week's episode.

This is another episode that I enjoyed and wish it didn't end. It feels like we are going through the birth pains with the development of the new JSA. That's okay with me but at some point you have to show me the baby. I think by episode 7 they should have their act together. I like Beth as Dr. Midnight and Rick as hourman and hope he can channel that anger into positive energy. This is a very good show.

Quoting Stewart:
DC's latest TV show is doing well!
I knew it would, as soon as I saw the Pilot episode

Growing the audience, even for a CW show...ALWAYS a good sign

Quote:
growing 16 percent in audience (to again best The Flash‘s in-season finale) while holding steady in the demo.
Quite interesting, but summer and fall seasons are different in terms of numbers. Although these days, not many are hitting the beach at least given the current "pandemic."

Also Stargirl gets re-aired Sunday nights (8 EST) as ABC during the summer at least airs their game show block, starting with Celebrity Family Feud. And at least until this Sunday, in the 9 EST hour, Supergirl goes up against the Whammy with the reboot of the 1980's game show classic Press Your Luck; hosted by Elizabeth Banks where contestants could win up to $1,000,000.

I saw what Dad found, but I'm not quite sure how he would connect the truck damage with RIck rather than someone else. He did find that gadget, but how does he know that other things have been given out?

Good episode. Good backstory for Rick, as well as some progression forPat, Henry Jr.'s power development, and the teambuilding.

I'm very eager to see the new JSA go head-to-head with the ISA. Been action-light for a couple of weeks, so I'm looking forward to some climax.
