Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. Part 1 Recap

We are coming to the end of this incredible journey that Geoff Johns has taken us on. Only two episodes remain of Stargirl. One of the things we've seen consistently is that any time in this series there is a part 1 and part 2, the episodes marry together like one full story. Today we are getting the first part of what will certainly take two episodes worth of time to cover. Will Brainwave be successful in killing the Whitmores or the Dugans? What will the master plan of the ISA be and can the JSA figure it out before it's too late? Can Rick decode his father's journal in time to unlock whatever secrets lay in wait? Let's start getting to the bottom of these questions, here's what stood out to us:

  1. 11:35:15: Almost all of middle America is projected to be covered by Brainwave's mind. The goal is to reprogram the minds of Americans to think like them. Get them to fight for the ISA, as they will have to do to secede from the union. Courtney and Barbara prep to leave the house. Pat and Mike head to the Pit Stop to get STRIPE. Pat is going to let Mike know what is going on but Mike isn't very receptive to it. Mike walks off in anger but Sportsmaster arrives to kill Pat. Meanwhile at the Whitmore home, Tigress arrives to kill Barbara and Courtney. Courtney is able to get the upper hand and blast Tigress away to a defeat. Barbara stands in awe of her daughter's ability. Pat is on the ropes with Sportsmaster but Mike saves his father by drilling Sportsmaster in the back. The two can escape to the cabin.
  2. The Cabin: Word of Sportsmaster and Tigress's failures reach Icicle. He calls in The Fiddler to help assist them. In Principal Bowen's office, Bowen encourages her son to fight back against a bully. The Dugans and Whitmores arrive at an undisclosed cabin location where the rest of the JSA is waiting. Sir Justin also arrives bringing a KFC feast! Dragon King invites Brainwave to the central core of his machine. They have to test the device ahead of the main event. There is a chance the device could kill Brainwave but he is steadfast in his convictions. The test goes well and Brainwave could hear millions of voices.
  3. Rex's Journal: The secrets in Rex Tyler's journal may be the key to stopping the ISA. Sir Justin offers encouragement to Rick to solve the equation. Mike wonders if he found the staff before Courtney if it would have worked for him. Courtney allows Mike to try the staff but it doesn't light up for him. Mike wants to help but with no powers and no building knowledge there isn't much he can do. Anya Bowin arrives to help Tigress and Sportsmaster to kill the JSA. She'll play her fiddle and immobilize them while Tigress and Sportsmaster kill them. Bowin takes it too far however when she calls them bad parents and Tigress kills Bowin.
  4. Plan Revealed: Rick and Pat talk about the journal. They discover that the secret code was the year of the Mustang he loved so much, 1966! The JSA now has a map of all the tunnels below Blue Valley. They find out the machine they are building is to allow Brainwave to connect to many millions. Using the map, the JSA comes up with an attack plan. STRIPE and Stargirl will go in from the river. Beth and Barbara will go to The American Dream to monitor the electricity output and Wildcat, Shining Knight and Hourman will head through the tunnel they already know.
  5. 35 Minutes: Beth is able to discover the ISA's plan! It turns out they want to force people to fight Global Warming, erase racism, embrace solar and wind power, basically all good stuff. The JSA wonders if they are on the right side? They then discover that 25% of the people Brainwave reaches will fight too hard against the programming and then they will die. Basically the ISA will kill 25 million people in the reprogramming. Just then the Gambler hacks into Beth's hack. They find out that the brainwave attack will only effect adults. Additionally, the broadcast will start at the 30 minute mark, the countdown is only there to show when the reprogramming is completed. All the adults are frozen under Brainwave's control. Now controlling STRIPE, Brainwave turns Pat against Courtney and we cut to black!

Only one more episode to go! We are so excited! Be sure to follow us on Twitter, we are going to do a Stargirl prize giveaway soon! Stay tuned!

I thought this was a very good and insightful review:

https://www.tvfanatic.com/2020/08/stargirl-season-1-episode-12-review-stars-and-stripe-part-one/

And I think she has a valid point about the writers using Beth's friend "Chuck" too much to come up with vital info (and move the plot along). At some point, it does begin to look like lazy writing.
Rick could probably have typed in his data into a computer, and printed out a map of the tunnels. Pat knows enough about machinery to figure out that the ISA was liklely building a broadcasting system of some sort, perhaps to broadcast Brainwaves' mind control messages to a very large group of people. After all, they were using satellite TV technology! The writers really don't need to keep falling back on having Chuck solve all the puzzles all the time...

Well, I didn't think I was going to see tonight's episode because by power was out but it came back on at 7:59. I kid you not. I guess it was dumb luck or divine intervention.
Another solid show to lead into the finale. Really looking forward to see how this all plays out and who's left standing. I don't know how but I hope Mike saves the day.

GREAT SCOTT...he did that literally! This is by the first few minutes the most violent episode of the show...no wonder it got a TV-14 rating.

SURELY HE JESTS...apparently not. Just don't tell Kara Danvers about that!!!

Someone really needs to shut Cynthia up.

In that test scene, with the countdown going on and Brainwave walking to the chair...I am reminded of The Incredible Hulk pilot where David Banner went to the chair to get what became a massive accidental gamma ray overdose.

Bowin takes it too far however when she calls them bad parents and Tigress kills Bowin.
Blue Valley High is going to need a new principal!

1966?! HOLY BATMAN.

Beth is like Cisco...comic relief, a big geek and has very cool powers, thanks to Chuck

This is the ultimate game of Beat The Clock against the globalists that are the ISA and their version of Myriad...only 10x bigger.

By the trailer for the finale, STRIPE and Pat come back to life setting up things for the final rumble against the ISA.

This successful and enjoyable ride that has been Stargirl's first season comes to a head next week. Same Star Time, Same Star Channel.

In other words, join the New World Order and embrace slavery under tyranny. Oh, how dandy!

"Mike wants to help but with no powers and no building knowledge there isn't much he can do"

OK - now it really does sound like Mike gets powers and perhaps plays the crucial role in the defeat of the ISA. I'm thinking he finds that pink Johnny Thunder pen just in time to pull it off!
